Valhalla

Wodan’s residence in Asgard, the land of the Aesir, is called Valhalla. This Hall is built of spears and its roof is made of shields. Wodan doesn’t live in Valhalla alone, as it is also the residence for the fallen warriors, called einherjar. It is the duty of the Valkyries to bring and accompany the einherjar to Wodan’s hall after their death on the battlefield. Therefore, Valhalla is a warrior paradise, where the fallen challenge each other in the courtyard day by day to practice their unusual “art” of fighting to the death. Every evening, they reincarnate at exactly the right time so as not to miss the feast. Valhalla is reputed to have 540 gates and, at the time of Ragnarök, 800 einherjar will march through every single one of these to face their final enemy, the giants. That’s why, Valhalla is nothing other than a training camp for fallen warriors to increase the Aesir’s power against the giants. Wodan will lead one half of them while the other half will be headed by Freyja.
