Ran

The giant Ran is the wife of Aegir (although some medieval sources say she is actually his daughter). Their children are known as Aegir’s Daughters, and they can be seen as the waves of the sea. Ran is her husband’s counterpart for she is the wild, stormy and deadly ocean whereas he represents the calm side of the open water. Her name means “robbery” in Old Norse and that is for a good reason because she owns a net with which she pulls castaways down into the deep sea. She rules the underwater otherworld which is the final resting place of the drowned; Valhalla is reserved for the fallen warriors while the rest of the dead are destined to Hel. Once, Loki borrowed Ran’s net to help a couple of Aesir through a precarious situation.
